How To Choose Plastic Material For Cosmetics Packaging

In the cosmetics market, packaging is not just a container, but also a carrier of brand culture. Different types of plastics are used in cosmetic packaging, each with its own characteristics based on its material. Today, Mlodo will guide you know more about it.

Ⅰ: Eight Packaging Plastic Types

1.PET/PETG

Features: high-gloss sheen, transparency, strength, recyclable.

  Application:

PET: bottle lotion transparent, cream jar, cosmetic tubes, lipstick tubes, etc. Product texture and remaining amount clearly.

PETG: Compared with pet materials, PETG has better tolerance and chemical resistance, higher degree of freedom in production, easier molding, and higher quality. The cost is suitable for thick-walled, odd-shaped containers (antique jergens lotion bottles), travel cosmetics that are susceptible to attack (travel spray bottles), or skin care products with more complex ingredients such as cleansers, oils, and alcohols.

Mlodo’s View: it is suitable choose for mid-to-high-end cosmetics industry can make up for the fragility of glass and is a high-quality idea.

2.PP

Features: Excellent chemical stability (resistant to various solvents, oils, acids, and alkalis), lightweight, good toughness, high temperature resistance (steam sterilizable), low cost. Can be made into a matte finish. Recyclable, and PCR (post-consumer recycled) PP is widely available, making it a core material for sustainable packaging.

Applications: Cream jars, lotion bottles, bottle caps, inner stoppers, tubes, cosmetic boxes, vacuum bottle shells, spray pump bodies, etc.

  Mlodo’s View: Economical,corrosion-resistant, and a safe choice.

3. PE

Features: Soft, good chemical stability. Divided into HDPE (high density, relatively stiff) and LDPE (low density, relatively soft).

  Applications:

HDPE: Opaque or translucent, commonly used in shower gel bottle, shampoo bottles and ointment tubes.

LDPE: Even softer, commonly used in skincare tubes, squeeze bottles, bottle cap liners and dropper bottle head.

Mlodo’s Viewpoint: Often used as a basic functional material with low cost.

4. PMMA

Features: It is acrylic. Transparent and high-glossy appearance just like glass, easier to process and print on logo, but easy to breakage. Disadvantages include higher cost, susceptibility to scratches and higher production costs.

Applications: High-end serum bottles, face cream jars, perfume bottle caps, lipstick tubes.

Mlodo’s View: This material can enhance the luxury of cosmetic packaging.

5. PCTG

Features: it is upgraded version of PETG. Higher clarity, superior impact resistance, excellent chemical resistance, BPA-free, and easy to dye and process.

Applications: skincare products with high requirements for safety, transparency and durability, such as children’s skincare products, high-end vacuum bottles, complex-shaped containers, reusable packaging and in line with green cosmetics standards.

Mlodo’s view: This represents a new generation in premium material, safe, durable and high-quality.

6. AS/SAN

Features: Acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer. High hardness, good transparency, scratch resistant, brittle.

Applications:Transparent covers for compact powder cases, cosmetic brush tubes, mascara tubes, and other bottles and jars requiring high transparency and hardness.

Mlodo’s view: Commonly used in transparent rigid packaging products.

7.ABS

Features: Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer. High strength, good toughness, dimensional stability, easy to electroplate and spray and can be made to have a metallic finish.

Applications: Bottle caps, pump head housings, cosmetic case bodies, pen barrels, lipstick tube bases, and other components requiring both structural strength and decorative appeal.

Mlodo’s View: Suitable for functional structural parts and electroplated decorative parts.

8. Bio-based

PLA: Derived from plants such as corn, it is compostable and biodegradable. However, its heat resistance and barrier properties are relatively poor and it is currently mostly used in short-term environmentally friendly products and auxiliary packaging.

Bio-based PE/PET: Some raw materials are derived from plants and its performance is the same as traditional petroleum-based plastics. It is recyclable and has a lower carbon footprint.

Ⅱ. How to Choose the Right Plastics for Your Brand’s Cosmetics

  Step 1: Check Ingredient Compatibility

Ingredient Compatibility: The primary consideration! Products containing essential oils, alcohols, or acids must use PP or PETG, which have excellent chemical resistance; avoid using PS.

Step 2: Determine Appearance and Texture

  High-end Transparency: Choose PET/PETG/PMMA.

  Matte/Gentle Finish: Choose PP.

  Luxury Glass Texture: Choose PMMA.

Metallic/Pearl Effect: ABS electroplating or color masterbatch.

  Step 3: Functional Requirements:

High Barrier Strength: Choose PET or EVOH multilayer co-extrusion.

High Temperature Sterilization Resistance: Choose PP or PPSU.

High Toughness and Impact Resistance: Choose PETG or PCTG.

  Step 4: Cost and Sustainability:

  Cost Control: PP

Easiest to Recycle: PET, HDPE, and PP have mature recycling systems

Sustainable Frontiers: PCR recycled materials, bio-based plastics.
